T'was the night before Christmas, when all through Platt College,
The days had grown long, with staff forced to acknowledge,
That students were tired and exhausted from learning.
A break was required, for which students were yearning.
"Go ahead, get on out, you've worked hard enough!"
Said the chefs, who agreed, the term had been tough.
"Alright, I give in, put the needles away!"
Future medical assistants, oh yes, they obeyed.
"Remember your flossing and other techniques!"
"Oh yes," said dental students, "For the sake of clean teeth!"
The massage therapy students agreed, as well,
That practice made perfect, so back injuries don’t swell.
So after weeks spent studying and decorating doors,
After time spent on tests and stifling snores,
A short time with Santa, who said, "Be good for good’s sake,"
The students went home to recuperate.
But during this break, you just wouldn’t believe,
Platt College was still busier than you might perceive.
For throughout the hallways, if you'd been there, you'd hear
The sound of jingling bells, laughter, and cheer.
It wasn’t the instructors, as one might expect,
But the hardworking admissions staff as one might suspect.
How they still do it, your guess sure beats mine,
But they left behind gifts, and you won’t guess what kind.
Those gifts are a future, shiny and bright.
For those who would seek it, whose passions have light.
You seek a career? We’ll help you – you’ll see.
Happy holidays from Platt College, with love to you and me.

Platt College: Why Choose Platt?
First, it has to be said: we have awesome students. They love us, and we love them. Just check out this amazing video of some of our students discussing why they decided to attend Platt College:
There’s earning a degree, and there’s getting an education. You can do one, or the other, or both. At Platt, we prefer you do both – as evidenced by the number of students you just watched describe what their lives are like at Platt. Going to college is truly a life-changing experience, and it’s one we’d like to help guide you through every step of the way. Whether it’s with enrollment, financial aid opportunities, or actual in-class interaction, we’re here to make sure you succeed in every facet of your life.
Rather than shuffle students in and out anonymously, we try to make it a point to get to know each and every person that walks through our hallways. We also hope you get to know your classmates, as well. As you just saw in the above video, Platt students develop strong relationships with both the Platt staff and with their classmates, which helps create a fun learning environment and a strong base of support. After all, your new classmates are having the same experience you are – who better to help you get through it?
We know it’s tough to find your perfect career... and it’s our job to help make it easier! Got questions? Give us a call, or connect with us on our Facebook page. We’re here to help!

Platt College: Education, Career Preparation, and… Football?
Back in October, we held our first-ever Platt College Show and Tell Contest. The idea was to have students take photos and write a short description of some of the things they were learning as Platt students and have them post it to our Facebook wall. The prize was suite tickets to a college football game, which definitely got a lot of people excited. We even had some video guys set up shop and record some footage of a few students who were especially pumped about the contest:
It was a definite success, and also involved a lot of tugging on our heartstrings. In the end, we wound up selecting Chelsea Rodgers to come along with us to the game. She told us a unique, heartfelt story relating to the loss of a family member, and we just couldn’t turn her down. Thank you so much for sharing your experience with us, Chelsea. We love having you as a member of the Platt College family!
We love having such dedicated students! Feel free to connect with us (and them) on the Platt College Facebook page.

Penny Wars were a HUGE success!
Penny Wars were a HUGE success! During the month of October, students teamed up to raise money to benefit Infant Crisis Services. Platt Central students raised $496.80 which was used to purchase 121.5 pounds of in-kinds goods for the babies and toddlers of Infant Crisis Services. That is a amazing total! This included 1620 diapers which will diaper 45 babies for 1 week. Also purchased was 4 toddler size coats, 16 sippy cups and 63 bottles. Infant Crisis Services would not be able to serve these babies without the support of the community.

Platt College Kicks Off an Oklahoma Food Revolution
Families invited to free hands-on cooking expo
The Culinary Institute of Platt College and Oklahoma Fit Kids Coalition have teamed up to host an event designed to help create a healthier Oklahoma. On October 15, from 11 a.m. until 1:30 p.m. the parking lot in front of Platt’s north campus at 2727 West Memorial Road will transform into a giant cooking classroom and activity space. The goal of the Platt My Plate event is to get people moving and to teach them to cook a healthy meal based on the USDA “My Plate” guidelines.
In Oklahoma, one in three children are overweight or obese, we rank last in fruit and vegetable consumption and we’re on track to be the most obese state in the nation by 2018. Financially, the numbers are just as staggering. U.S. taxpayers spend $147 billion annually on the treatment of obesity related diseases. Oklahoma spends $853 million.
“The Culinary Arts program at Platt College has been offering our students a broad-based culinary education for over eight years. So, when we heard some of the recent Oklahoma health statistics it made perfect sense for us to use our expertise, our resources, our chefs and students to teach Oklahoman families some simple, healthy ways to cook,” said Mike Pugliese, President of Platt College.
The OK Fit Kids Coalition is a statewide initiative to improve the overall health and well-being of Oklahoma youth and families by reducing childhood obesity. They will be at Platt My Plate with physical activities, games, and kid-friendly recipes to encourage Oklahoma families to eat better and move more.
“Every child in Oklahoma has the right to live a happy, healthy and active life,” Director of Oklahoma Fit Kids Coalition, Amber England said. “Empowering kids to make healthier choices is a way to make that happen and we couldn’t be more thrilled to team up with Platt College for such an amazing event for Oklahoma families that does just that.”
Platt My Plate is free for everyone. Spots are limited for the opportunity to cook a “My Plate” meal with Christine Dowd, Owner and Executive Chef of Trattoria Il Centro and Aunt Pitty Pats, and the award winning chefs of Platt College. Registration is located at www.plattcolleges.edu All the food and cooking materials will be provided by the Culinary Institute of Platt.
“My Plate” replaces the USDA food pyramid with updated nutritional information and encourages all families to choose to fill half their plates with fruits and vegetables at every meal. More information on “My Plate” can be found at www.myplate.gov
Several other Oklahoma organizations are teaming up with Platt and Ok Fit Kids to make this event one to remember. Dairy MAX will be present with a booth for Fuel Up to Play 60, a unique program that empowers students to make healthy eating and physical activity changes for themselves, their classmates and their school. The organization also has a game of “human bingo” planned for the kids. Sunflower Market is providing “make your own” trail mix and Schlegel’s Bicycle is providing a bicycle to giveaway to one lucky participant at Platt My Plate. The Allied Health programs of Platt College and Oklahoma Health Academy will be providing free massages and blood pressure screening.
In addition to a comprehensive program offering students a broad-based culinary education The Culinary Institute of Platt College offers Saturday cooking classes to the public called The Secrets of the Chef. Beginning January of 2012, four free Plate My Plate classes will be added to the Secrets of the Chef schedule, giving Oklahoma families an opportunity to learn to cook a healthy My Plate meal together.

Platt Starts Oklahoma Food Revolution with Platt My Plate Event
Over 60 Oklahoma families learn to cook a healthy meal together
The smell of fall was in the air on Saturday, October 15, 2011. At about 11 a.m., the aroma of cooked apples, cinnamon and fall vegetables and the sounds of giggling children began to escape from a large tent in the parking lot of the Platt College’s north campus as families from all over Oklahoma City and across the state were gathering for Oklahoma’s very own “Food Revolution”. Platt My Plate was a one day event designed to provide Oklahoma families with an opportunity to learn how to cook a USDA My Plate meal.

The Culinary Institute of Platt College loaded the tent with cooktops, utensils, and all the food necessary for 60 families to cook a healthy meal, in three back-to-back sessions under the direction of Chef Christine Dowd, Owner and Executive Chef of Trattoria il Centro and Aunt Pitty Pats.
According to the Oklahoma Fit Kids Coalition, a partner in the Platt My Plate event, one in three children in Oklahoma are overweight or obese and we’re on track to be the most obese state in the nation by 2018. “Financially, the numbers are just as staggering. U.S. taxpayers spend $147 billion annually on the treatment of obesity related diseases. Oklahoma spends $853 million,” said Amber England, Executive Director of Oklahoma Fit Kids Coalition.
“When we heard these statistics, we were compelled to do something,” said Mollie Hager, Chief Executive Officer of Platt College. “So, we decided to do what we do best. Platt has been teaching people to cook for almost a decade, so we decided to invite Oklahoma families to come out and let us teach them how to cook a healthy USDA My Plate meal,” “That’s how Platt My Plate was born.” Mollie also announced to Saturday’s participants that The Culinary Institute of Platt College is planning to offer four more free Platt My Plate sessions to families in 2012, as part of their “Secrets of the Chef” cooking series.

Riley Raasch came from Muskogee with her mom Lisa. |
Sharon Frizzell of Oklahoma City brought her daughter, her grandson and granddaughter. “We all had a great, great time,” said Sharon. “My 17 year old grandson is excited to use the gift certificates he won from Platt College.”

Preston, Trevor, Michael and Lauren Higgenbottom from Edmond each took a part in creating their My Plate Meal. |
The Chef Instructors and students of The Culinary Institute of Platt College played a huge role in the success of the event. They helped to develop the recipe for the event (see below), purchased and prepared the food, set up the demonstration and the family cooking tables and assisted the families as they cooked their My Plate Meal.
“We went straight to the store, bought the ingredients and went home to cook it again! It was so fun! My kids had a great time,” said Tasha Blair. She and her son’s Sam age 5, Nathanial age 8 and Seth age 7 came from Edmond.
Platt will be announcing the dates of the next Platt My Plate session in the next few weeks. Follow Platt College on Facebook http://www.facebook.com/plattcolleges to learn more about upcoming Platt events.

Platt College nominated for the Accrediting Commission of Career Schools & Colleges (ACCSC) 2011 Community Service Award
Community Service is defined as a service or activity that is performed by someone or a group of people for the benefit of the public or its institutions. At Platt College, we believe that volunteering, participating, and fundraising activities strengthen our students’ sense of civic engagement and community, and help them achieve their educational, developmental and social goals. Additionally, community service activities are a deliberate connection to stated learning goals. Staff, faculty and students work together in planning, implementing, and reflecting on each activity.
While these activities help students make a difference by contributing something of value, it also motivates them to stand for something bigger than themselves. Additionally, reinforcing the importance of social skills that are needed to be successful in any industry.
Platt College offers a variety of diploma and degree programs in Culinary Arts, Information Technology, Allied Health Care and Nursing. All students are encouraged to participate in community service activities. Culinary Arts students have opportunities to show off their talents through their culinary creations. The Allied Health Care and Nursing students provide their experiences, education and passion for living healthier lives.
Platt College and its students participate in numerous community service initiatives on an annual basis to include: Junior Diabetes Research Foundation (JDRF), American Heart Association (AHA), Go Red for Women, Court Appointed Special Advocates (CASA), Oklahoma Brain Tumor Foundation (OKBTF), Infant Crisis Services (ICS), Hospitality Career Initiative (HCI) & Oklahoma Hospitality Foundation (OHF).
JDRF, Central Oklahoma Chapter provides community outreach, support, and education and organizes events throughout the year to raise funds for diabetes research. Membership includes families from over 100 cities in central and western Oklahoma. Founded in 1984 by parents of children with Type 1 diabetes, the Central Oklahoma Chapter continues to rely on volunteer support in all fundraising and outreach efforts. JDRF has funded more than $3 million in diabetes research in the state. Platt College staff, faculty and students supports the JDRF initiative by raising money through bake sales, casual days, t-shirt sales, car washes, and donations. Platt College served as a Corporate Sponsor in 2009, 2010 & 2011. President, Michael Pugliese served as Chair for the 2009 fundraising activities. All funds raised and matched by Platt College totaling $18,192 dollars during the 2009 and 2010 campaigns. Additionally, staff and students volunteer and participate in the annual Walk to Cure Diabetes event which raised the grand total of $240,000 in 2010.
The AHA’s mission is to build healthier lives, free of cardiovascular diseases and stroke. That single purpose drives all they do. The need for their work is beyond question. For the past seven years, each Platt College campus has initiated fundraising activities to support the AHA. Platt College student efforts raised over $14,000 dollars during 2009-2010. In addition to fundraising, students and staff participate in the annual Heart Walk and prepare omelets for all volunteers the morning of the walk. The driving force of these activities was lead by Mary Kay Ford, Platt College employee of over 22 years. Mary Kay had a passion for educating students and the supporting the efforts of the American Heart Association. Mary Kay herself suffered from a long battle with heart disease and recently passed away from congestive heart failure. Platt College staff and students will continue its relationship and support of the AHA in memory of Mary Kay Ford.
Go Red for Women is one of the many leading initiatives of the American Heart Association. Go Red encourages awareness of the issue of women and heart disease, and also action to save more lives. The movement harnesses the energy, passion and power women have to band together and collectively wipe out heart disease. In 2010, the American Heart Association set a strategic goal of reducing death in women. In fact, heart disease is the number one killer of women. Funds raised from activities support awareness, research, education and community programs to benefit women. Since 2009, Mollie Hager, Platt College Executive Director has served on the Go Red for Women’s Executive Leadership Team (ELT). With the support and Heart Sponsorship of Platt College, Mollie helped organize the Annual Heart Ball, Go Red for Women Annual Luncheon, hosted numerous ELT planning sessions and secured auction items for luncheon.
The mission of the National Court Appointed Special Advocate (CASA) Association, together with its state and local members, is to support and promote court-appointed volunteer advocacy so that every abused or neglected child can be safe, establish permanence and have the opportunity to thrive.

They work to provide for needs through education, advocacy, research and service. The mission of the ICS is to provide life sustaining formula, food and diapers to babies and toddlers in times of crisis…Because no baby should go hungry. Volunteers at Infant Crisis Services are the backbone of the organization. Without them, they could not feed the more than 12,000 babies and toddlers in our community who go to them for food, formula, diapers and clothing. Platt College President, Mike Pugliese currently serves on the Board of Directors and Executive Assistant, LeeAnn Hooker sits on several of the ICS Boards to support fundraising initiatives. Currently, Platt College is promoting a diaper drive through the Help Another Mother program that all local campuses and 14 churches are participating in. Student contributions come in form of catering various fundraising events.
The Oklahoma Restaurant Association (ORA) is the trade association of restaurants and foodservice operations, the state's largest private industry employer. Representing more than 4,000 restaurants and members, the ORA develop the membership to do together for industry what cannot be done individually. In 2008, Platt College invested $15,000 to become an ORA Key Club Partner in support of ORA programs, initiatives and events. The Key Club is a group of elite association of members who have pledged substantial investments for the development and continuation of ORA educational programs and events. The Hospitality Career Initiative and Oklahoma Hospitality Foundation are the two educational programs supported by Platt’s partnership. By providing sound instruction, as well as giving students the opportunity to grow both personally and professionally while learning, we at Platt College believe we are offering students the best possible combination of solid technical education while preparing them for a career in industry. Going with the market: Platt College degrees reflect industry needs
By: Brian Brus
Posted on the Journal Record at 08:50 PM, Wednesday, June 15, 2011
OKLAHOMA CITY – New degrees introduced at Platt College reveal the interests and needs of the job market in central Oklahoma and affirm the relevance of such private schools in the current economy, Executive Director Mollie Hager said.
“Some of our students aren’t cut out for a traditional university environment,” she said. “Our new medical laboratory technician program is a 14-month program. A lot of our students don’t have four years to spend somewhere and they need to get it done. … We try to adapt and grow as the industry grows and offer courses that local students need. These came about from extensive market research and industry feedback.”
The medical lab technician associate degree program will begin this month at the private vocational school’s campuses in Moore, north Oklahoma City, Tulsa and Dallas; the degree program in network systems administration and security will also begin this month at the Dallas campus and will take 12 to 18 months to complete.
Platt College and others like it are steeped in an alphabet soup of educational organizations and certifications intended to validate the value of their programs. Platt is licensed by the Oklahoma Board of Private Vocational Schools, or OBPVS, and accredited by the Accrediting Commission of Career Schools and Colleges of Technology, or ACCSCT, which in turn is recognized by the U.S. Education Department. The OBPVS was established by the state Legislature in 1970 and authorized to set minimum standards for private vocational schools, including standards for classes and training qualifications of instructors.
Platt is also approved for training by the Bureau of Indian Affairs, the Job Training Partnership Act, the State Accrediting Agency for the training of eligible veterans, and veterans eligible for vocational rehabilitation. The school recently applied for recognition from the National Accrediting Agency for Clinical Laboratory Sciences, the agency that oversees medical lab technician programs. That accreditation would mean that Platt graduates can sit for certification exams through the American Society for Clinical Pathology, Hager said.
“That will provide a lot of value to our students. It’s not required for them to find work, but it will provide better opportunities in the industry,” Hager said.
Phil Berkenbile, director of the Oklahoma Department of Career and Technology Education, said the state’s career-technology schools also design their programs or courses according to industry’s ever-evolving demands. The department oversees the state’s technology centers but does not grant degrees or have any authority over the Oklahoma Board of Private Vocational Schools that licenses Platt, Berkenbile said.
“We’re seeing a lot of programs in the aerospace industry that are getting ready to shift to composites away from sheet metal, and that’s a biggie,” Berkenbile said. “At Tinker, they’re always bringing in the big tankers and repairing them with sheet metal, but at the same time some of your new fighter jets are composites. You can’t teach both skills at the same time, so we’ve got some schools that are transitioning into one from the other.
“It’s a steady transition over the years, but it’s also what the customer needs,” he said. “We used to have a lot of carpentry and plumbing programs. Now we have construction academies where a student will also learn concrete and masonry, packaging additional skills to enhance the likelihood of a student getting a job.”
Hager said every change at Platt begins with market research to determine what programs are needed. That involves reviewing U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics data and bringing local industry experts to advisory board meetings each year.
For example, according to U.S. News and World Report, laboratory technician is among the 50 best careers in 2011 and should experience better than average job growth in the next 10 years. And the Bureau of Labor Statistics predicts a 53-percent growth in available jobs in the field of information technology between 2008 and 2018.
When Hager took her position at Platt in 1997, one of the two campuses at the time had programs in heating and air conditioning, graphic design, automotive repairs and nursing. Since then the school has added culinary, health care and cosmetology courses.

Platt College adds Two New Degree Programs Preparing Students to Meet Expected Job Growth
Oklahoma City, OK – June 9, 2011 Platt College, known for its allied health and culinary programs, has added two new associate degree programs designed to prepare students for growing job opportunities in medical laboratories and for the ever-expanding field of information technology.
“Since our programs are designed to prepare our graduates to answer the needs of today’s and tomorrow’s workforce, these two new programs are great additions to the Platt College line up,” said Mike Pugliese, President of Platt College. “We have done extensive research to insure job opportunities in these fields and our curriculum has been designed to provide the skills, hands-on experience and academic discipline to prepare our students for the job.”
The Medical Laboratory Technician program will begin on June 27 at Platt’s campuses in Moore, North OKC, Tulsa and Dallas and will take approximately 14 months to complete. The Associate of Science degree in Network Systems Administration and Security will begin on June 27 at Platt’s Dallas campus and will take 12-18 months to complete.
According to the U.S. News and World Report, laboratory technician is among the 50 best careers in 2011 and should experience better than average job growth in the next 10 years.
“Medical Laboratory Technicians play a vital role in providing the physician with accurate and timely results of laboratory tests. That's what the physician uses to determine the correct diagnosis and treatment plan,” explained Kim Lamb, director of admissions at Platt College.
Graduates from Platt’s Medical Laboratory Technician program will possess skills to perform laboratory tests and related duties in accordance with standardized laboratory practices in clinical chemistry, hematology, urinalysis, clinical microbiology, immunohematology and serology/immunology with the supervision of a medical technologist. Upon completion of the program, the student will have the ability to perform proficiently on laboratory testing procedures, think critically and communicate effectively. The program will also prepare the student for entry-level employment in clinical and reference laboratories or physician's offices as medical laboratory technicians.
Platt’s placement services will assist students in obtaining jobs in hospital laboratories, public health laboratories, reference laboratories, biomedical companies, universities, industrial medical laboratories, pharmaceutical companies, forensic medicine, and the armed forces.
The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) predicts a 53% growth in available jobs in the field of information technology between 2008-2018. To help meet the need, Platt College in Dallas has added a computer lab and has lined up a first-class team of instructors to teach the Network Systems Administration and Security program.
The new lab includes a cutting edge Technology Center with high end Dell Computers, HP Blade Server with Cisco Switch and Routers. Students will be working with the latest software and the A+ Certification courses include a full PC Kit that the student will build and take home.
The program has been designed to provide students with basic and intermediate networking skills required to design, install, configure, and maintain a variety of networks as well as protect networks using established security concepts and strategies. The combination of technical and general education courses helps to prepare graduates for the complexities of the workplace which requires both technical skills as well as an understanding of business functions, human behavior, problem solving, and effective communication in a technical environment.
Upon graduation, students will be assisted by Platt’s placement team in finding employment in entry-level positions as network administrators, computer or technical support specialists, help desk technicians, and computer systems administrators where there is a strong emphasis on network security.
Platt’s Dallas location is offering both day and evening programs for students wanting to obtain this degree. The day program can be completed in 12 months and the evening program takes 18 months.
